Some people on their first smoke (I'm not sure with cigarretes, but it has happened with other, substances) suffocate and die because their body can't take it.
Some people on their first drink get totally wasted and go unconcious in a bathroom, or get in a car wreck on their first time drinking. So it doesnt always take ages. It may just take minutes. Just like jumping off a cliff onto a trampoline.

and even then, the smallest amount of drugs or cigarettes will hurt you in the long run. Maybe from one cig you won't get lung cancer, but if you already have a higher than avg. chance of getting it, that cig sure as hell won't help. does it take people to actually have something bad happen to them IRL or to someone they know to get these things through their heads?

Not that many years. And other effects you are much quicker to notice are non-life threating, but very harmful and negative anyways.

Pretty damn right, I hadn't thought of that. Alcohol is even worse than you'd expect. And the worst thing is that you don't need to drink to be killed because of alcohol, an alcoholic driver may kill you anytime.
Governments should ban alcohol and tobacco, as they are not only the origin for thousands of deaths every week, but they are also highly negative, even deadly, for innocent people. If a country has to protect their citizens from terrorism, it should have to protect them from drugs as well, don't you think so?
IRT Xellos (previous post): I've saved your post in my collection of most useful texts. I couldn't agree more with you.
IRT N: Yeah, exactly. Now I'm realizing drugs are even worse than I thought when I this thread started.
IRT Xellos (last post): Very true. The same happens with alcohol, it's the worst thing your liver could get, also bad for the brain and the reproductive organs (how can people drink it knowing it's bad for sex?)

IRT Xellos: First, i could fall down the stairs right now and break my neck. I don't have to be stoned to do that. Same with most of the things you suggested.
Second, Overdoses you are right with.
IRT DR's first smoke die comment: Your thinking of sniffing glue or other solvents. Some people can do it for a while, others die first sniff because it caused their heart to stop. And i think we can all agree that's bad.

Ok, but lets see what your chances are of doing that while not being stoned or drunk? And alchohol poisioning can kill instantly. And my freind who was raped probably wouldn't ahve eben if she weren't drunk. She was ebcause it was easy for the bastard to trick her into coming w/him instead of having to physically force her

Quick few points.

#1 Thats a result from someone else drinking, not doing it yourself.
#2 Would be good if they did that, but people don't want them banned. If the government were to ban all drugs, they would lose support from the people, and rival parties, like Communists or (better yet) Nazis, could use that to get into power. You're a minority. You can't stop the masses. But you don't have to join them.

banning em all would do nothing tho Miguel, look at the US's prohibition in the 20s.
And wtf it matter if it was u or soeone else whow was drunk and killed you/other people? The point is, getting drunk/stoned/whatever is BAD. Simply put, no pros whatsoever.

IRT OCB Point #1: That's a result from _drinking_, just drinking. Alcohol is so bad I don't need to drink to be killed because of it, that's one of the reasons why I want it banned.
IRT OCB Point #2 and Xellos: I don't mean they should do it tomorrow. First they should start an aggressive anti-drug campaign with ads everywhere. Then they should focus TV news, primary and high school education and other powerful instruments on showing how bad they are. That will give enough reasons to double the price of alcohol and tobacco (with special taxes which would fund all of this). They should be very hostile to the companies that produce them, get them into trials, make them pay *astronomical* fines, and try to push foreign companies producing drugs into abandon business in the country. After all that, they should start a campaign to ban it in 6 years (giving free medical help to alcohol and tobacco addicts). Finally they should be able to maintain the prohibition provided the new generations are given the proper education. People would be happy when they see the thousand negative effects of drugs vanish, less car crashes, and considerably lower taxes (much lower public health expenses, the very high taxes they put on alcohol and tobacco before banning them, all the money got from suing the companies until they fold or leave the country, and now alcohol and tobacco illegal trading fines, which would be extremely high). Even if it's impossible to absolutely wipe drugs off, and a small percentage of people still sell, buy and use them, it'll be 1/10 as bad as it is now, and we'd have a reason to send them into jail and set very high fines on them.

Agree with Xell, there are PLENTY of good ways of spending your time and money. The worst is that those things cost money! hell, why people don't care when it comes to spend their money in tobacco and such and then they say they have no money for any other things much more useful like a motorbike, or... a computer, to say an example?
(if it has to be modded you can edit from this point, Wiseman)
For example here some grs. of Coca costs near 60Euros (Euro = US $ more or less)
60 Euros can be used to get much other things perhaps get more than 2 DVD, invite your friends for a dinner... 60 Euros is a lot of money! Does it not matter when it comes to get Coca, and it is a trouble when you try to get a DVD?
Spend your money in drugs is plainly stoopid. But you cannot tell them that, they just ignore you.

I think they need to change the methods of teaching kids about the bad effects of drugs and alchohol. All they do is tell us it is bad and that we shouldn't do them which makes some assholes want to do it even more. They need to show really gross videos like they did in my driving school for people to really see what happens. I don't think as many people would be drinking if they saw peoples limbs seperated from their bodies and burned corpses from cars catching on fire because of drunk drivers.
